Today you are 5! FIVE!! You’ve been trying to claim you’re 5 for a while now, especially since we had your birthday party a few days early, but I insisted you were still 4 until today. But really, who am I kidding? You’re a big, grownup BOY now. I don’t know when you got so tall, but your long skinny legs sure aren’t the stubby little toddler stems I remember. (Your little brother has those now.)
I asked you what kind of party you wanted and you said a sports party, so we gathered up all our balls, bats, rackets, bikes, and scooters and headed to the park with some friends. You guys had a blast even though our canopy broke and a freak (but brief) rainstorm swept through right when we were trying to light the candles on your baseball cake. (Not homemade. Mom had enough to do running to Party City for the balloons, the supermarket for the watermelon and popsicles, Sports Authority for the balls, and the craft store for the favors. One day I’ll learn not to go overboard.)
You loved the plasma car Daddy and I gave you. Unfortunately, so does your brother, but you’ve been pretty good about giving him turns. You also loved the Matchbox car racetrack, the pogo stick thing, and all the outdoor toys your friends gave you.
You’re pretty easy to please, except when it comes to dinner. That’s one of the best things about you. You can have just as much fun with a cardboard box and some crayons as you can with all your fancy new toys. And you still love books, though sometimes you get mad when I make you try to read. I did hear you reading to Riley early one morning, which I loved because it let Mommy get 10 more minutes of rest.
You’re starting kindergarten at a new school in the fall, with big kids and everything. You seem mostly excited but a little nervous about it, which is exactly how I feel, too. I am sure you will do fine. You make friends very easily and you are good at entertaining yourself, too. You love art and music and playing and getting dirty, and you’ll be able to do all of those things at your new school.
But before that, we have the summer. The other day you shouted, “Let’s get summer started!” when we went outside to play with the water table. We call you “Summer Boy” because you love to run around barefoot with no shirt on. (Lucky for you, you have your dad’s olive skin.) And you absolutely LOVE the pool. You can really swim now, and you wear your goggles everywhere, even the bathtub and dinner table sometimes. You sure do keep things interesting around here.
Happy Birthday, Miles! I love you and I’m so glad you’re my son.
PICKS O’ THE DAY: Current favorite TV show: “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.” Makes you laugh hysterically. Fave books: “All of them.”
