Why Moms Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

by Abby on January 30, 2013

The Bump BlogLike a lot of moms I know, I have a hard time asking for help. Sometimes even admitting I need help. “No thanks, I got it!” I might say, while carrying a child, a purse, and five bags of groceries, one in my teeth. I don’t want to inconvenience anyone. People are busy. They have their own stuff to deal with.

I always remind myself that people don’t generally offer help that they don’t want to give, so why not accept it? Not necessarily every time, maybe – I do want them to keep offering.

My comment from TheBump.com:
I was actually wondering about that! My son is not a newborn, but he’s 18mo and while he is napping, I am a prisoner in my own home. I cannot leave; his naps are sacred to us both. So what if I had another kid that needed to be dropped off or picked up from school? What the heck do parents of two or more kids do in this situation? Maybe we can trade secrets since I know the answer to one you once asked (I believe in your book) about shopping carts.

Well, some parents I know wake the baby up. That’s what I usually had to do. Other people get a neighbor to come over while they run out, and other people arrange to always be home during naptimes. There’s no easy answer.
