When You Give a Kid a Camera

by Abby on May 20, 2013

Some relatives from California came to visit us last week, their first trip to Baltimore since I’ve had kids. This gave us a great excuse to play tourist in our own city. We visited the prettiest parks and best sandwich shops, went to the zoo and the Inner Harbor, rode the water taxi and enjoyed an outdoor concert. It was fun to show off what we love about where we live.

At one point in our travels, my 6yo son asked if he could have my iPhone to take some pictures. After a brief moment of fear that he’d drop it into the harbor, I agreed. Why not? Looking at his shots later, I was struck by his unique perspective. For instance, the shadows under the swing set:

Or looking down an 1812 cannon:

Or this expertly framed shot of the city skyline:

There’s something to be said for seeing something through another person’s eyes.

And here’s what happens when you give the camera to a 4yo to take a group shot:

Give me that camera back!

Well, I suppose that’s an interesting perspective, too…

Looks like you have a budding photog there. I love his pictures. My 7yo likes to take pictures, too, and I always enjoy the result. They see things differently than us, and it makes for a wonderful perspective. Thanks for sharing!

Very cute pics, kids have their own way of seeing the world, that’s for sure.

Abby, these photos you shared are really good. It’s interesting how Miles intuitively understands things about composition, and also, how he is seeing things that are right in front of us too, but we might not notice. Of course I love the last picture, too, and how Miles is like, “give me that camera! you don’t know what you’re doing!”

That’s exactly what he was saying, Angie! It’s like you have boys, too… 😉

My kids take better pictures than my wife and I do. I love letting my kids take pictures because I get a chance to see what they find interesting. We get to see how they see the world or at least how they want us to see it.
I like the cannon shot the best.
