On the way home from dropping off my son at preschool, there’s a special spot. If you stop at the intersection at just the right moment, the early-morning sun streams through the trees in just such a way that everything around it looks misty and magical. This photo doesn’t do it justice – I’m a writer, not a photographer – but it’s stopped me in my tracks more than once.
The most astonishing thing about this spot, though, is that at any other time of day you’d pass by without a second glance. Just an ordinary yard on an ordinary street. Nothing special about it. On gray days, I roll right past, rattling off my to-do lists in my head and praying for the seat warmer to hurry up and kick in.
But in the right light, if you look up and notice, the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

The Autumn Sun has a special crispness and sharpness to it as well.
I love when the sun shines through, and it looks like the actual sun… you know — the way we draw it, with the rays shooting out. I recently noticed, like really noticed, how the sun is doing something similar in the photo I snapped of our old house the day we moved. It’s such a bittersweet photo, with the Uhaul in the driveway. And there’s this sun coming in from behind. You should tag this photo on Instagram #lookforthelight — Karen Walrond (chookooloonks) started it, and this shot is perfect!
