Partying Like an (Aging) Rockstar

by Abby on June 22, 2011

Birthday CakeSo yesterday was my birthday. Don’t get all excited; I didn’t. And besides, I do not want to be one of those people broadcasting their birthday all over the internet only to get a few knee-jerk “Happy Birthdays” from people I don’t even know that well. (OK, I’m actually jealous that I’ve seen PETS get more birthday wishes on Facebook than I do! That’s just not right.)

Anyway, once you’re over 21, I don’t see the point of making a big deal about birthdays. I’m not going to start lying about my age (30-something’s all you need to know!) or bemoaning the loss of my youth or anything, but I will say that when my 50-something babysitter said she couldn’t get her 20-something kids to go to a U2 concert with her because it wasn’t their type of music, THAT made me feel old. Are you seriously telling me that kids today care more about the prepubescent, swoopy-haired Bieber than one of the most iconic rock bands of all time?!

C. and I ARE going to the U2 concert. He’s way more of a fan than I am, but I can’t deny that the band’s 35-year career figures prominently on the soundtrack of my life. I remember one of the popular girls in my high school did an interpretive dance to “All I Want Is You” at a talent show once, which may sound totally lame but was actually considered very cool at the time. Then again, so were big poofy bangs.

Speaking of lame, how sad is it that my first thoughts about the concert were not, “Man, this is going to be awesome!!” but “How many hours of babysitting will that cost us?” and “I am going to be SO tired the next morning.” Yep, I’m one wild and crazy gal.

I AM looking forward to the concert, but my real gift was a child-free morning to myself. I went to the gym, I got a massage, I ate lunch at my favorite café – by myself and sitting down! – and I got a cake pop at Starbucks. THAT’S my idea of a good time. Call me lame, I don’t care.

So wish me luck staying up past my bedtime and attempting to party like a rockstar. An aging rockstar, that is. In the meantime, enjoy this great card my mom sent me. The inside reads “Happy Birthday to a woman of many talents.” Except in my case those would be soy hot dogs. 😉

I remember when I went out at 10 or 11 p.m. Now, if I’m not in bed asleep by then, I’m usually at least putting on pajamas and getting in bed to read or watch The Daily Show. The prospect of staying out past my bedtime is no longer very attractive to me. I, of course, would make an exception for U2. How many mixed tapes did I make that include at least one, maybe two, songs from The Joshua Tree album, I wonder….

Also, I am swooning a bit and fanning myself at the description of your child-free morning. It sounds divine. Of course, it’s almost exactly what I would plan for myself. I actually thought about asking my family if I could spend Mother’s Day alone because that would have been a real treat. But when I began hinting around about it, they all acted like I was being a little antisocial. Well yeah.

I asked for mother’s day alone. I wanted 6 child and husband free hours. I sent my husband and son over to my MILs so he could visit with His mother 😉

Looove the card! How cool that your birthday was on the summer solstice, longest day of the year 🙂 That morning alone does sound awesome…

I felt a bit like an aging rock star on our recent anniversary trip to Vegas. We were in bed by 9 (Pacific Time) the first night and slept 12 hours. I’m at a point in my life where consuming large amounts of alcohol and waking up with a hangover is very overrated. But it was fun to dress up and remind myself I still got it.

And you do, too. So go rock that concert!

My husband and I look at each other when we see an ad of 30-something-year-olds at bars, drinking, dancing, having a good ole time, and we laugh. Those ads age us, because we can’t even begin to imagine how to do that ever again. I’d like to think I could muster up the youth inside of me to go to a concert, and I hope one day I will. A concert that is loud and requires dancing and being on my feet. The last concert I went to was George Winston and I got to sit the whole time, and that’s just when I had one baby and had just turned 30.

I hope you have an awesome time at the concert! And hopefully you’ll get to sleep in both days of this upcoming weekend 🙂

i was at the concert, too… 7 months pregnant haha! yep i was ready for bed before bono even came on stage.

totally worth it, though. impressive show! and i saw lots of 20-somethings there! 🙂

(ps my only demand was that we actually were in SEATS the whole time. which would have worked out great except the rather large man standing next to me must have had beans for dinner or something… and i was directly in the line of fire!)

Wow, Pamela, I’m impressed! It was fun, but my feet were killing me by the end, even though we had seats, too. Sorry about your flatulent seat-mate. 😉

So HERE you are!!! I haven’t been able to blog (or blog hop) much lately so this is my first time over at your new place. Very cool! Funny too because I’ve been thinking lately that I’ve definitely entered a new phase with my kids and have had a nagging feeling that I need to transition and/or update my blog too. I’ve been playing around with wordpress a bit. It’s like a whole new world. haha 🙂

Anyway, back to your post! Happy Birthday!!! And a U2 concert? That is awesome! My husband and I are fans…and yeah, I had the poofy bangs too. 🙂 Hope you guys have a blast! And that card is a crack-up – love it!

Happy birthday! I think your child-free morning sounds perfect! And I SO hear ya on the difficulties of planning a night out and being excited about it. Tonight’s my wedding anniversary and instead of being psyched about a fun night out, I’m heaving a sigh about doing laundry so I’ll have something clean to wear, and wondering whether we’ll be able to stay awake through our date night. 🙂

Happy anniversary, Malia! It always turns out to be worth the effort, I find.

I love this post – for my birthday a few weeks ago, my 16month old had a really nasty flu/virus that turned into pneumonia, and I got sick while taking care of him. I celebrated my birthday first by being in the ER from 12:00am – 5:00am and then by working 8-5 while my husband stayed home with our son because I missed so much work earlier with our son being sick. People kept asking me what I wanted for my birthday – I told them sleep. My mom brought dinner and containers for leftovers over to our house, and my husband took a complete night of watching our son so I could go to bed at 7! The days of partying are so behind us haha.

I know I know its like 2 years late but I randomly found this blog and am catching up to the present time. I just wanted to say that your birthday is my half birthday. Half birthdays are not exciting any more but since my birthday is the winter solstice and 4 days before Christmas we always did a little something when I was a kid. And now I’m going to continue reading and catching up on your life (like some creepy stalker.)

Thanks for your comment, Stacy! Why do we stop celebrating half birthdays as adults? Best idea ever! And another excuse for cake. 🙂
