Who’s Really the Boss in Your House?

It starts at birth: new parents will do whatever it takes to keep their baby happy, even if it means rocking them around the clock, never sitting down while holding them, or bouncing on an exercise ball for hours trying to burp them.

And it continues into toddlerhood, when little Miss or Mister Bossypants tells you where to sit, what to say and what voice to say it in, and you DO. Many times in my years as a parent, I have wondered why on earth do we let the shortest people in the house run the show? Is the person who wears the pants in your family wearing training pants? Side note for writers, bloggers, or anyone trying to grow their audience, build their platform, play big or go home, or whatever the trendy catchphrase of the day is for those of us putting ourselves out there in the world: remember when Tina Fey poked a tiny bit of totally innocuous fun at Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes, warning her to stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son? And T. Swizzy blew it all out of proportion by taking herself way too seriously and saying in an interview that “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women”? I just wanted to sigh, shake my head, and say, “Taylor. Sweetie. Calm down. It was a JOKE. You can take a joke, can’t you?” That’s how I feel sometimes when I read the comments on my Bump posts.

So remember, the more you put yourself out there, the more people who read your stuff, the more likely it is you will encounter people who just don’t “get” you. Tina Fey and I are starting a support group if you want to join us.
