Deep Thoughts About Sunglasses

by Abby on May 31, 2013

new sunglassesI bought myself a new pair of sunglasses. See? They were a total impulse buy at Anthropologie, one of my favorite stores ever. They cost more than I’d usually spend on a pair of sunglasses – I’m a “cheap pair in every purse” kind of gal – but I loved the colors and the shape and I had a gift card from a generous relative burning a hole in my wallet.

I like how the purple and green and orange seem to go with whatever I’m wearing. I like that they’re big and dark so I can throw them on in my makeup-free, early-morning state and still show my face in the carpool line. I like how they’re a little bit different, a little bit artsy-funky-cool.

I’ll take all the pick-me-ups I can right now. I’ve been struggling a bit lately, to tell you the truth. Just with life in general. In a Tina Fey “why are normal things so hard for me” kind of way. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: being a grownup is overrated.

I’m approaching my 40th birthday and my 10th wedding anniversary. Next fall both my boys will be in school 5 days a week. It’s a time of transition, changes, reevaluating, taking stock, looking ahead. I wake up sometimes in the middle of the night, gripped with panic over middle school and 401k’s. Things I don’t need to be worrying about for YEARS.

I know some people do, but I am the type of person who needs to focus on the present. I feel like I once heard a relevant quote about that’s why waitresses don’t look too far ahead or they’ll drop their tray, but Google let me down when I tried to look it up. Thanks for nothing, Google. (Side note: my mom once worked as a waitress and DID drop an entire tray of little creamer cups everywhere, before they made them with lids. That story always cracks me up.)

I was going somewhere with this… oh, yeah, my new sunglasses. I see them as a metaphor for my life right now. They’re not going to solve all my problems. Not everyone’s going to like them. They may not last forever. But they suit me and they make me happy. I figure that’s a good start.

LAUGH O’ THE DAY: I picked up my 4yo from preschool and that Taylor Swift song “22” was on the radio, where she sings, “It feels like the perfect night to dress up like hipsters…” Riley says, “Dress up like HAMSTERS?!” And suddenly it was my favorite song.

Other funny things 4yo’s say

P.S. I realize I have been mentioning Tina Fey and Taylor Swift a lot lately. I don’t know what’s up with that, either.

The fun thing about life us that while we seem to get a bit wiser and more able to figure things out as we get older, the truth is that we always feel like we’re 25 and wondering what the heck is next. You mean she’s not saying “hamsters”, oh my, I am so disillusioned.

That is so true, Lou. I keep thinking I’ll get to a point where I have it all figured out. I’m still waiting! #slowlearner

Well, I love that Taylor Swift song now too. Your 4 year old put it in perspective – ALL OF IT. We need humor, we need to not worry too much about the future, and we need new cool sunglasses every once in a while.

You’re right, Pamela! I’m so lucky I have these little jokers to give me perspective. 🙂

I love your shades… they look so good on you. I finally got a new pair of RayBan Aviators (I’m a one pair and keep them forever until you lose them, then punish yourself and don’t let yourself have a new pair for two years then give yourself another chance kind of girl) and I feel so much better when I slide them on. And I think the waitressing tip is a good one… I was a great cocktail waitress (first job out of college) and I think about when I’m “in the weeds” in my life. I really found a groove, kept moving and was always nice to the customers. The thing about it is, you don’t have time to think about anything beyond the task at hand and it was strangely fun. I’m sure the tips at the end of the night didn’t hurt either…. wait, where am I going with this? 🙂

Love the sunglasses. I’m sure you’ve already seen it but I much prefer the parody to the real song (although Riley’s version is pretty cute!):
