We were in the car driving home from swimming lessons when this song came on the radio. “I love this song,” said Miles from the backseat. “It makes me feel good.” It IS pretty catchy. (Even if the video’s a little freaky, as I just discovered.)
Everyone’s got their happy songs, don’t they? Judging by the response to his Oscars performance, Pharrell’s “Happy” is literally a lot of people’s happy song right now. (Personally, his ridonculous hat makes me happy. A Smoky the Bear hat with a track suit? Why not! Dude sold it for $44k to charity!!)
I’ve got a few go-to mood-boosting tunes. “Fireflies” by Owl City is one. (Great video!) The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Soul to Squeeze” is another. I’m physically incapable of not turning it up and doing my best Anthony Kiedis impression when it comes on the radio. (It’s pretty damn good, despite what my kids say!) And Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound” is one of my newer happy songs. (Why do all the songs I like end up on commercials, BTW? Have you seen the new Target spot featuring Haim?)
We asked Riley what his “happy song” was. “Big Bennigan!” he replied. Um… come again? “Big Bennigan, from Just Dance 3,” he insisted. He started singing it and suddenly Miles got it: “Ohhh, he means ‘She’s Got Me Dancing.’”
“That’s what I SAID. She’s got Big Bennigan!” said Riley. Right. Whatever makes you happy!
What’s your happy song?
RANDOM ANECDOTE O’ THE DAY: As I was Googling music videos for this post, I came across The Smiths’ “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” which is like the anti-happiness anthem. If you grew up in the ‘80s like I did, you may be a Smiths fan, like I am, but MAN, Morrissey is like a suicidal Debbie Downer with PMS! The lyrics to this song actually make me laugh, they’re so depressing.

That’s funny. “Happy” is so catchy, which is why it made me happy the first 100 times my kids played it. Now … Not so happy. And it’s new, so I will have plenty more opportunities to clap along when I “feel like a room without a roof.” But it sure makes my kids happy.
