Back-to-School Humor

by Abby on August 26, 2014

It’s back-to-school time, and suddenly my inbox is flooded with funny takes from parents who are SO ready to have their little love bugs out of the house all day. And YES, I am one of them! This comic strip my mom sent me pretty much sums up my feelings:

For Better or For Worse comic strip: back to school means freedom

Look, I adore my children and enjoy spending time with them. But 3 months is a LOT of time. And I’ve decided that summer is pretty much only fun for kids. Not as much for the snack-packers, sunscreen-appliers, and nonstop activities coordinators. (Meaning: me.)

The world’s most adorable viral-video makers – the family that brought us “Christmas Jammies” – have done it again with this back-to-school, “Baby Got Class”:

And because I like yoga pants and using the bathroom solo as much as the next mom, I also enjoyed this Back to School Mom Rap. There sure are some clever, photogenic parents out there.

But this post a friend sent me about how much things have changed about going back to school since the 70’s made me LOL for reals. I did grow up in the 70’s, but in a hippie teacher family so the Wonder Bread and Virginia Slims don’t apply, but I SO can relate to the striped shirts and corduroys (Toughskins!) constituting my back-to-school wardrobe. And the brown paper grocery-bag book covers! I got a little nostalgic.

And #10 in the second part, about the BPA-free bento boxes and the Instagrammed Disney-shaped vegan hemp sandwiches, almost made me wet myself in the carpool lane. HOW did we go so far off the rails?! I know in the past I’ve lost my mind over school fundraisers and finding twistable crayons at the craft store (WTF? Who comes up with these supply lists?!). But I’m trying really, really hard not to do that this year.

There’s some good advice here: 5 Things Parents Need to Stop Doing this School Year. Although re: #1, doing your kid’s homework? Last year my son’s teacher wrote notes on his homework, chastising us for not pre-correcting it: “Get your parents to check your work!” Huh? Isn’t that what teachers do? And also how kids learn? Plus I was too busy Instagramming our dinner. As for #4, may I remind you of my volunteering horror story? Alrighty then. My work here is done. Happy back-to-school, everyone!

Oh My, this is so hilarious, loved each of the links and yes, folks have really gone off the rails in 2014 with the back to school “necessities”.
I can relate to the 70’s lunches, when I was in high school my Mom pasked me 6 fried egg sandwiches every single day with 2 eggs and mayo on each sandwich. I also bought a plate lunch and scarfed up anything my friends didn’t want. I should mention that I played all the sports in high school and burned up a couple of million calories a day. OY!!

I’m so glad I don’t have to pack your lunch, Lou! And thanks for bringing up what I have to look forward to when the boys hit high school. 😉

Does the term “eating their way out of house and home” mean anything to you?? It will. 🙂

I’ve seen all of these – so fun! I’m usually not quite ready for summer to end, but this year I totally was. Maybe it was all the fighting at my house!
