My 5yo son completely stumped me with this question one day: “Mom, don’t you ever play with toys?” I was about to reply, “Of course I do!” but my new Shark vacuum cleaner and my smartphone hardly qualify. I couldn’t even come up with a tennis racket or pool float. Lame.
That’s not to say we don’t have fun around here. I suppose my main entertainment comes from watching my kids enjoy THEIR toys. For instance, this circa-1984 space station we snagged at a yard sale for $1. Four Clorox wipes and a half-dozen Q-tips later, I deemed it sanitized enough to play with. And boy, did they.
This is at 9am, half an hour after we acquired the toy:
And this is 7 hours later – still fun!
But I’ll tell you, there’s nothing like seeing your kids thrilled with a $1 used toy to make you feel like a chump for spending $30 on the latest licensed merchandise at Target. Lesson learned.
Other things we do for fun include fashion shows:
Then there are the culinary masterpieces we’ve created in our kitchen, such as peanut-butter-and-jelly-sandwich-crust “sushi.” (What? I hate to waste food!)
And the simple yet elegant apple-and-cheese sailboats, the perfect hors d’oeuvre to please even the pickiest palate.
All this fun, fashion, and food is accompanied by regular musical interludes. Here’s Riley playing “the baby blues.”
I’m telling you, people, it’s a nonstop party in our house. Key word: NONSTOP.
What do you do for fun in your family?

What a great post today, the $1 toy that lasts all day is truly priceless. Love the fashion show and foodie ensembles. The harmonica is just absolutely precious.
It might be NONSTOP, but, today sure looks like a lot of fun.
Thanks, Lou! It’s never boring around here, that’s for sure. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
LOVE the sushi! May have to make some for myself tonight! And nothin’ beats a one buck toy for hours of pure entertainment.
Wow, those sandwich crust sushi rolls are seriously the best invention ever 🙂 My 4 year old used to eat crust, until one day a classmate of hers at preschool declared them to be yucky. Now I might have a way to get her to eat crusts again!
I love watching my girls play with toys, especially when they try to play their harmonica, which is actually mine from when I was a little girl (my grandpa gave it to me), so seeing them play with it really is memorable.
