Good News/Bad News

by Abby on August 3, 2011

I try to look on the bright side of life, I really do. But some days it’s just So. Darn. Hard.

Good news: My mom comes to help with the boys while C. is away (again) on business.

Bad news: Her too-brief visit is over, and the boys and I have to take her to the airport and say good-bye.

Good news: The airport’s near a big outlet mall. We can stop in and score some great back-to-school deals.

Bad news: The boys have an extremely low tolerance for shopping in general, and clothes shopping in particular.

The boys, driving a hot dog truckGood news: There are a bunch of those mechanical, ride-on cars at this mall, and I’ve got a bag full of quarters.

Bad news: The kids want to go on the rides the minute we get to the mall, whereas I want to hit the shops first.

Good news: The 2yo’s strapped into the stroller and the 5yo’s semi-interested in picking out some T-shirts. Also, Carter’s has a Lego table inside the store that buys me some browsing time.

Bad news: $32 for a pair of kids’ pajamas?! Even on sale, that’s too much. And where’s all the summer stuff? Gone already? We don’t need any fleece when it’s 98 degrees out, thanks anyway.

Good news: The kids have a blast on the rides.

Bad news: The quarters run out along with Mom’s patience, yet the kids are not ready to move on.

Good news: The food court’s nearby. Who can’t be bribed with a snack?

Bad news: An irate toddler pissed to be dragged off the Bob the Builder ride, that’s who. Let the screaming and thrashing commence.

Good news: Um, the mall’s not that crowded, so the number of people whose lunch and eardrums we’re ruining is limited?

Bad news: On the drive home we hit traffic.

Bad news: The air conditioning conks out. And we are out of water.

Bad news: Then the whole car goes “Clunk!” and breaks down in the middle of downtown.

Bad news: Did I mention it’s 98 degrees out, we have nothing to drink, we skipped out on lunch because of the tantruming toddler and now it’s past naptime? And we’re IN THE MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN BALTIMORE?!

Good news: We are near the train station, as opposed to, say, a crack house or strip club. (I told you: this is Baltimore. Have you never seen “The Wire”?)

Bad news: My 5yo has to go to the bathroom. He asks if he can go to the men’s room in the train station by himself. Letmethinkaboutthatforasecond: HELL NO. We all traipse into the filthy restroom together.

Good news: My husband’s back in town; I reach him at work and he can come pick us up in 20 min. He calls a tow truck on the way.

Bad news: The tow truck driver has a poor grasp of the English language and an even worse grasp of geography. An hour passes.

Good news: We all make it home…eventually. The toddler passes out from the tantrums and the heat.

Bad news: The whole damn day.

Good news: Wine.

Whoa!! Now that is a rough, rough day. I do love the quote of the day, though…that is really funny. Of course, it probably wasn’t too funny at the moment.

Glad to see that wine is the great soothing presence….love a glass at the end of the day.

Smile, breathe deep, it’s a new day and the boys will be angels today. 🙂 (maybe)

Call me an optimist, but I really wasn’t thinking the day was so bad (or maybe I’m numb?)– until your car conked out. That would have sent me over the edge. My car broke down shortly after we moved as I was driving Dillon to school. Being on the side of the road with kids is the worst. But it was morning, and my friend with a minivan had just unloaded her kids and was able to come back and pick us up, so we didn’t have to wait for the tow truck.

I hope you poured yourself a second glass! You’re a good mom.

I would say wine is your bright side!

I am so sorry! Good news: a new day!

Hands down, this is the roughest day I have ever heard of for a mom! I’m so glad you survived it. The AC not working was like was a foreshadow of the car breaking down. Thank goodness your husband was coming back from work on the same day. I must have read your post while I was sleeping last night, because I had a dream that our car broke down in the middle of the high way and I couldn’t get out with my girls as cars were zooming past us and my cell phone was out of battery. But fortunately this was just a dream. I’m sorry you had to get through a day like that, especially after a great visit with your mom 🙂 Hopefully the rest of the week will be easier!!

Thanks, all. We stayed home yesterday then woke up today to find we had no power due to a storm. The good news is… aw, forget it. I’m writing this week off. 🙁

Oh, I’m sorry Abby but I couldn’t help chuckling when I read about losing your power. This is definitely a rough week for you all 🙂 Just think how much better it has to get by this weekend!
