Looking Back at 2011

by Abby on January 2, 2012

Baby New YearThere’s just something about this time of year that makes people all introspective, isn’t there? The older I get, and the busier I get, the easier it is for me to forget everything that happened in the past year. It can all seem to run together in one big blur of sleep-work-school-kids-no sleep-housework-bills-errands-etc. But taking a cue from my friend Angie Mizzell, I decided to recap my year. And you know what? It turns out 2011 was a year full of milestones and memories.

Indulge me while I take a look back, won’t you?

January: In the middle of a blizzard, I flew to Nashville to attend Blissdom, my first big blog conference and one of my first times away from my kids, ever. I knew no one, had no expectations. I left renewed, recharged, and chock full of ideas and reading material. Hearing Brene Brown speak and reading her book, The Gifts of Imperfection, was one of the highlights of my year.

February:  We celebrated my younger son’s second birthday and I reflected on laundry and my collection of 37+ single socks.

March:  After contending with a leaky basement and raccoons in the attic, I considered having a plaque made to warn visitors they were entering “The House of Calamity & Chaos”; I wished my family would please just stop touching me already; and I served some time in the pre-school library.

April:  I confessed that I alphabetize my spices, I examined the secret to a happy marriage, and I revealed my strange form of Tourette’s.

May:  On Mother’s Day I gave birth to a brand-new blog! Then I revealed why I am the worst housekeeper ever, presented a toddler tantrum in 3 acts, and struggled with learning to embrace my awesomeness (on Angie’s blog!).

June:  On my birthday, I partied like an aging rockstar with U2, and discovered 5 reasons why taking a working vacation isn’t so bad when you’re a mom and freelance writer.

July:  I had some random thoughts at the pool and discovered that if you’re trying to prove you have it harder than somebody else, you can justify anything.

August:  We had an earthquake in Baltimore, followed by a hurricane. WTH, Mother Nature?! We had our first fun family vacation (for real!), and I discovered I’m a latent nature girl. Who knew?

September:  My oldest child started kindergarten and demonstrated that he is nothing like his mother; my youngest started preschool; we courted disaster while shopping for new Crocs; and I had a nervous breakdown over giftwrap.

October:  In honor of my 8th wedding anniversary I rewrote my vows. I also learned to never take a toddler to a wedding.

November:  I examined what I am thankful for and why, and ran away to Miami for a much-needed girls’ getaway where I walked on the beach and spent $18 on a single drink.

December: I wrote my 100th blog post on this blog. I put together, polished, and published an e-book. (COMING VERY, VERY SOON! You better believe that merits its own post!) And I enjoyed Christmas at home with my family.

Whew! It’s been an eventful year, hasn’t it? I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store. Thank you so much for joining me while I chronicle all the highs, lows, and general craziness. Emphasis on craziness. 🙂 Happy New Year, everyone!

A fun year of watching all the events in your life, I think I started following your blog around May or so when I found a link on Angie’s post. It has been a riot seeing how you try to get it all done with humor and chaos all around you. Here’s to a great year for you and your family.

Definitely an eventful year for Mother Nature – blizzards, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes….geez. Hopefully, 2012 will be more mellow. Congrats on the e-book! Can’t wait to hear more about it. Happy New Year!

Since I’m well aware of your awesomeness, I read every single one of these posts over the course of the year and it’s so cool see the past 12 months highlighted like that! I regret not going to Blissdom with you and resolve to meet you in person one of these days. I’m glad we had a chance to bond as you launched your new blog and am super excited to read and promote your e-book!
